YANGON, May 30 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar State Counselor and Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi has stressed the imperatives to promote the education sector to protect children's rights, Myanmar News Agency reported Wednesday.

Aung San Suu Kyi made the remarks when meeting with Virginia Gamba, special representative of the UN Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict in Nay Pyi Taw Tuesday.

Suu Kyi also emphasized the need to avoid occurrence of violence and abuse against the weak, who are mostly women and children, and to focus on taking preventive measures.

Gamba called for successful implementation of the joint action plan being implemented by Myanmar with the Country Task Force on monitoring and reporting on prevention of the recruitment and use of under-aged soldiers.

Gamba also expressed the UN's desire to further cooperate with Myanmar in the promotion and protection of children's rights, requesting Aung San Suu Kyi to help adopt expeditiously the Child Rights Bill which is before the parliament.

Meanwhile, Myanmar also called for UN's cooperation to eradicate child labor, saying that child labor issue is not only a big challenge to Myanmar but also a global issue related to poverty and natural disaster.
