Maldives records a drop in communicable diseases in June

MALE, July 18 (Xinhua) -- The Maldives Health Protection Agency on Wednesday reported a drop in the spread of communicable diseases in June following an increasing number of dengue, flu, viral fever and influenza patients reported earlier this year.

According to local media reports, the Health Protection Agency had earlier warned the public to take necessary precautions against the spread of these diseases and seek urgent medical care.

One person has died from the influenza virus while hundreds have sought medical treatment for viral fever and flu in the Maldives since January.

As many as 620 cases of dengue fever was also reported in May, dropping to 385 cases in June.

Viral fever cases decreased to 8,363 in June, from 14,707 cases in May, and flu cases dropped to 19,958 from 30,735.

However, patients suffering from diarrhea has increased from 2,652 cases in May to 3,049 cases in June.

Over 200 people were infected with the influenza virus in 2017, with six fatalities caused by the H1N1 or swine flu.
